Research Methods and Me: My Story

Picture
Welcome to Research Methods Review!  My name is Sean Heuvel and I am a PhD student in the Educational Leadership/Higher Education Administration Program at the College of William and Mary. I designed this website as part of a project for one of my doctoral classes (EPPL 714 - Adult and Continuing Education).  The idea for it came out of a personal experience I had in the process of completing coursework for my PhD.

At my present point in the doctoral program, I have completed most of my coursework, except for a couple of cognate courses and all of my research methods courses.  Because I completed my M.Ed. in Educational Leadership/Higher Education Administration from William and Mary in 2005, it has been several years since I took any research methods classes.  More recently, as I learned about pre-course requirements for the entry level doctoral research methods class (EDUC 663), I grew concerned that I was not as prepared for that coursework as I would like.  In conversations with fellow doctoral students, I learned that others who have been away from research methods for several years had the same concerns.  Therefore, when given the opportunity to pursue a project in EPPL 714 based on adult learning, I decided to create this online study guide to help myself as well as my fellow doctoral students.  While this website is aimed primarily for William and Mary doctoral students, it is open to anyone who would like to brush up on basic research methods concepts and find resources online for further information.

This website is not meant to be an online textbook.  Instead, it is designed to serve as a resource to brief students on the basic research methods concepts of which they should be aware and to direct them to online sources that can assist them in their studying. On this site, students will find basic information about quantitative and qualitative research methods (i.e. what one should know in advance of taking EDUC 663). They will also find links to other online resources to assist them in understanding terminology and concepts better.  In the "Useful Resources" section, students will find online tutorials run by outside universities focused solely on research methods concepts. Hopefully, this site will serve as a useful resource for doctoral students at William and Mary and beyond. Thanks for visiting!
